As the winner of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Smart City Challenge”, Columbus, Ohio received a $40 million prize to develop smart technology for their city. Paul G. Allen’s Vulcan Inc. contributed another $10M to bring the total to $50M.
Columbus beat out 77 other U.S. cities, including tech bastions like San Francisco, Calif., Austin, Texas and Denver, Colo. to win the title of the country’s first Smart City. As one of the fastest-growing cities in the Midwest and currently the second largest in the region — after Chicago — Columbus has much to offer. This funding is helping them use data analytics to improve access for residents to the city’s assets.
Ram Sastry, American Electric Power’s (AEP) Vice President of Enterprise Innovation and Resiliency walks us through the opportunities and challenges that supporting Columbus’ journey will present to AEP and its utility customers. From developing smart city goals to detailed electric vehicle and energy storage deployment, we continue to gain insights into our future.
