The impact of race and class on higher education is startling—even more so in the wake of the pandemic. One study found that black students hold as much as 85.8% more student debt than white students. And almost one-third of Hispanic and low-income households surveyed say that COVID-19 affected a family member’s decision to re-enroll, compared to only 7% of white or upper-middle-income respondents.
