After nearly 15 years of flat electricity demand, U.S. power consumption is now growing at the fastest sustained rate since the early 2000s, with data centers emerging as the dominant source of new load across multiple regions. While utilities welcome new demand for electricity, rapid load growth has risks. For example, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) recently warned that the U.S. may not have enough power to keep up with demand over the next decade, elevating risks of outages.
