Utilities are modernizing the grid faster than ever, integrating more digital systems, inverter-based resources, distributed assets, remote connectivity, and third-party technologies. But with that modernization comes a growing challenge for utilities and other responsible entities: the financial, operational, and reliability risks of proving that critical assets are visible, trusted, resilient, and performing as expected. As NERC requirements continue to evolve, compliance readiness is becoming less about static documentation and more about having defensible technical evidence before an audit, incident, or reliability exposes a gap. Internal network security monitoring under NERC CIP-015-1 is a major milestone in this shift, but it is also part of a broader evolution in grid reliability expectations. 

Using CIP-015-1 as a timely entry point, the discussion will examine a broader pattern across emerging and recently approved NERC requirements: utilities are being asked to produce stronger technical evidence that critical grid systems are observable, trusted, resilient, and performing as expected.
