Iowa has earned its reputation as a national leader in advanced manufacturing. A wide array of products – from medical devices to aerospace electronics – originate from the state's #1 industry which generates more than $16 billion worth of exports and accounts for 17% of Iowa's GDP.
Research led by Iowa's public and private sector leaders revealed the need for a shift to continue the industry's strong momentum. Findings revealed that the state's advanced manufacturing sector must continue adapting to Industry 4.0's emphasis on smart technology, data-driven operations and process automation.
In response, Iowa formed an industry-led Manufacturing 4.0 initiative. The resulting strategic plan established an innovative blueprint that allows the state to address Industry 4.0's challenges of adopting new technologies, increasing productivity and competing for talent amid ongoing globalization.
