Utilities don’t pay much attention to their underground cables because they’re not typically the source of reliability problems. There is roughly one underground outage for every ten overhead failures. While under grounding parts of the distribution system is an effective strategy for improving grid resilience, underground cables are far more expensive and time consuming to repair or replace when they fail. According to the US Energy Administration, they cost 5 to 10 times more per customer interruption than overheard failures and take 4 times longer to address and restore power.

In this webinar, industry experts will take a deep dive into what utilities can do to assess the health of their underground cables and the most cost- and time-efficient strategies to avoid outages and expensive replacements. You’ll leave with a better understanding of:

  • The importance of assessing the health of underground cables
  • Affordability and reliability implications of underground cable failure
  • How utilities can best target their investments
